| In 1878 The Theatre Royal was built on market gardening land by a company of Oddfellows. It is the oldest wooden theatre still in use in the Southern Hemisphere. In 2005 it was in need of such major maintenance that it could no longer operate and had to close.
Redevelopement, through the Nelson Historic Theatre Trust, has now been completed with the assistance of funds from many sources and it now offers the people of Nelson and the Tasman region a fully restored heritage auditorium alongside 21st century staging and front of house facilities.. |
